Every day, Atmawati and her husband collect plastic waste around their neighborhood. Atmawati’s storyĪtmawati is a mother of one and a Plastic Bank member in Tabanan, Bali Indonesia. Plastic Bank Indonesia has 320+ collection branches with 2,400+ monthly active members in 10 provinces. Collected material is processed into Social Plastic® feedstock for reuse in products and packaging – thus helping create new life for old plastic. Exchanges are secured through a blockchain platform that enables traceable collection, secures income, and verifies reporting. Plastic Bank’s collection community members gather plastic waste and exchange the materials at local collection branches for life-improving benefits – such as access to health, work and life insurance, digital connectivity, and social and banking services. Plastic Bank empowers Ocean Stewards to stop ocean plastic, building ethical plastic collection communities within 50 kilometers of coastlines and waterways. The World Bank study also found 83 percent of the annual plastic debris currently leaking into the ocean from land-based sources is carried and discharged via rivers. Due to the lack of a plastic waste management system in the country, an estimated 85 percent of plastic waste is not formally collected and 4.9 million tons of plastic waste is not properly managed every year – creating challenges from waste disposed in open dumpsites and poorly managed landfills.
